THE ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND'S MISSION IS TO PROTECT THE LIVES AND ADVANCE THE INTERESTS OF ANIMALS THROUGH THE LEGAL SYSTEM. THE ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND ACCOMPLISHES THIS MISSION BY FILING HIGH IMPACT LAWSUITS TO PROTECT ANIMALS FROM HARM, PROVIDING FREE LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND TRAINING FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE STAKEHOLDERS TO ENSURE JUSTICE FOR VICTIM ANIMALS, SUPPORTING TOUGH ANIMAL PROTECTION LEGISLATION AND FIGHTING LEGISLATION HARMFUL TO ANIMALS, AND PROVIDING RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO LAW STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS TO ADVANCE THE EMERGING FIELD OF ANIMAL LAW.

From February through June 2026, the Animal Legal Defense Fund delivered a sustained wave of legal and legislative victories that reshaped animal protection law across the country. The period's defining achievement came in May, when Iowa became the 50th U.S. state to classify first-offense animal torture as a felony — a decades-long milestone ALDF helped drive. Alongside this, ALDF secured protections for roughly 1,400 California mountain lions, won court clearance for New York City's foie gras ban, blocked anti-competitive agricultural legislation in Texas, and achieved direct rescue outcomes for hundreds of animals — including approximately 1,500 research dogs from Ridglan Farms and white lion sisters Nzuri and Kali from a Texas roadside zoo. Legislative wins in Florida, Maryland, New York, and Delaware further demonstrated the organization's multi-front reach, while the launch of LSAT Study Grants signaled investment in the next generation of animal law advocates.
Key Achievements

- 🚗16 states now allow civilians to legally rescue animals from unattended vehicles, with Washington and Nevada becoming the latest to enact these protections.
