Recent Progress (2026)
From March through June 2026, GFI marked a defining chapter in its history, anchored by its 10-year anniversary and a leadership transition to Interim CEO Rachel Lichte. The period opened with a landmark reflection: governments worldwide have invested over $2 billion in public alternative protein funding since GFI's founding, and cultivated meat has received regulatory approval in three countries. Research milestones followed in rapid succession β GFI's grant program surpassed $24 million awarded to 129 projects across 25 countries, generating 160+ scientific papers and $75 million in follow-on funding. New initiatives including the Advancing Alternative Proteins Planning Grants, the Alt Protein Project's inaugural Academic Research Challenge, and a Climate Bonds Initiative MOU signaled the organization's expanding reach across science, finance, and education. Cultivated salmon debuting on a Michelin-star chef's menu in Washington, D.C., offered a vivid marker of the field's commercial maturation.
