Recent Progress (2026)

From March through June 2026, Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana demonstrated both sustained scale and meaningful expansion across South Louisiana. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program continued packing nearly 20,000 boxes monthly for seniors, while the Makin' Groceries Mobile Market extended its reach with inaugural stops in Houma and a Little Grocers' Market for 135 Pre-K students in Opelousas. A $750,000 Walmart and Feeding America grant strengthened the food rescue network across 11 parishes. The period's defining milestone was the June opening of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Community Kitchen in Houma — a 4,500-square-foot facility capable of 3,500 hot meals daily — which activated for disaster response within weeks of opening. Advocacy through the Love One Louisiana coalition and a $5 million state appropriation push further elevated the organization's policy presence.
