Recent Progress (2026)
From March through June 2026, Mercy For Animals pursued a sweeping, multi-front strategy that yielded concrete policy and corporate wins alongside sustained grassroots mobilization. The period opened with a landmark commitment from Ahold Delhaize โ covering 2,000+ stores โ to ban cages in its egg supply chain, and closed with a major legislative victory: the EATS/Save Our Bacon Act was excluded from the U.S. Senate's initial Farm Bill draft following a sustained constituent call-in campaign. In between, MFA ran simultaneous corporate accountability campaigns targeting Kroger, Compass Group USA, Unilever, Sobeys, Marriott International, and Patina Group across cities from Chicago to Mumbai. Portland, Oregon's 7โ5 City Council vote to ban foie gras, the fifth edition of the Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard ranking 46 companies, and the New York octopus farming bill clearing committee rounded out a period of unusually high legislative and policy momentum.
Key Achievements
- ๐The fifth edition Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard ranked 46 companies on their chicken welfare commitments, progress, and transparency.
- ๐๏ธThe U.S. Senate's initial Farm Bill draft excluded the dangerous EATS/Save Our Bacon Act language, a milestone credited to a massive, unified movement of advocates.
- ๐ฆPortland, Oregon's City Council voted 7โ5 to ban the sale and service of foie gras, with fines of up to $5,000 for violators.
- ๐Mercy For Animals launched the #KrogerUnmasked campaign, pressuring Kroger to honor its backtracked 100% cage-free egg pledge.
- ๐Highlighted a past policy win: a 2018 driftnet investigation co-led with Turtle Island Restoration Network, SeaLegacy, and Sharkwater led to California phasing out large-mesh driftnets and a 2022 federal ban on the deadliest driftnets.
